King Charles III of the United Kingdom visited a Korean town in New Malden, on the outskirts of southwest London, on the 8th. His sudden visit to the Korean town was to get a feel for Korean culture ahead of the upcoming state visit by President Yoon Seok-yeol.

The gift he received from Koreans at this event and his subsequent comment has become a hot topic.

On this day, King Charles III received kimchi and a kimchi cookbook as gifts. It was a present ahead of his 75th birthday on November 14.

Known for not enjoying spicy food, King Charles III joked after receiving the gift, “The kimchi might blow my head off (because it’s so spicy).”

The kimchi he received was prepared in Korea and personally delivered by Jang Jeong-eun, the founder of the Korea Britain Cultural Exchange (KBCE), and Lee Ha-yeon, the president of the Korea Kimchi Association.

Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth, the mother of Charles III, visited Andong, South Korea, in 1999. At that time, the residents of Andong prepared a birthday table for Queen Elizabeth.

Charles III had previously visited Korea as the Crown Prince in 1992, and his younger brother, Prince Andrew, visited in 2019.
