Brenda Lee, at 78, Tops Billboard Chart, Ousting Mariah Carey
65 years after release
American pop singer Brenda Lee has claimed the top spot on the Billboard chart with her carol “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”
According to the latest U.S. Billboard chart released on December 5 (local time), Lee’s carol ousted Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” from the top spot on the main singles chart, the ‘Hot 100′(Billboard), 65 years after its release.
At the age of 78, Brenda Lee became the oldest artist ever to top the ‘Hot 100’ chart.
The carol “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was released in 1958 but did not gain a lot of attention.
However, in the 1960s, Brenda Lee released hit songs such as “I Want to Be Wanted” and “I’m Sorry,” earning her the title of a leading ‘Diva’ in the U.S., which led this song to subsequently gain attention.
Lee’s carol was included in the soundtrack of the famous movie *Home Alone* in 1990 and has been loved ever since.
However, it remained 2nd ranking on the ‘Hot 100’ chart during the Christmas season for the past four years pushed over by Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.
This year, Brenda Lee’s record company celebrated the 65th anniversary of the carol’s release by creating a new music video for the song and releasing a repackaged album launching a promotional campaign.
They created videos that gained immense popularity among the MZ generation and promoted them through platforms such as Tik-Tok.
Brenda Lee expressed her feelings through Billboard, saying, “In a world where everything moves so fast and fiercely, I honor everyone who has worked hard to make this song number one.”
