Chinese Cars on US Roads Could Be Subject to Tighter Regulations

globalautonews Views

On March 7, 2024, the Biden administration in the United States announced that Chinese cars, which are rarely seen on American roads due to high tariffs, could pose a significant risk to the U.S. by collecting sensitive data on Americans and sending it back to Beijing.

President Joe Biden of the United States stated in his declaration, “We are announcing unprecedented measures to ensure that cars from countries of concern like China do not compromise our national security by driving on American roads. I have instructed the Secretary of Commerce to investigate connected cars with technology from countries of interest and to take measures to respond to the risks.”

The Biden administration added that it would now start an official process to seek public opinion on how to regulate such vehicles best. These regulations could be applied to cars from Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela. However, none of these countries currently produce as many cars as China.
