Apple Announces AI-powered iPhone Call Recordings, Rivaling Samsung’s Galaxy

Apple plans to incorporate call recording and transcription features into the iPhone call application. This is the first time Apple has offered a call recording service, 17 years after the iPhone’s launch.

On June 10th, at the 2024 World Developer Conference (WWDC) held at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, Apple announced that the iPhone call app will offer voice recording, transcription, and summary features.

With this new operating system, iOS 18, iPhone users are expected to be able to use the call recording service starting in the second half of the coming year.

Apple plans to enhance the call recording and summary service through its newly revealed artificial intelligence, Apple Intelligence. When a call is recorded, both the caller and the recipient are automatically notified. After the call, the AI generates a summary, making it easy to see the key points.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, claimed, “Audio recording, transcription, and summary features will be available in both the phone and memo apps. Both parties will be automatically notified during the call that it is being recorded.”

With Apple incorporating call recording, voice-to-text conversion, and AI-based summary features into its OS, it is expected to compete directly with Samsung.

Samsung already provides a summary service through GalaxyAI in an on-device AI format. When announcing Apple Intelligence, Apple also emphasized privacy protection during AI operations. It is explained that private cloud computing technology combined with on-device AI will provide reliable security.

If the iPhone 16 series, expected to be released in September, includes a call recording feature, it could significantly influence smartphone purchase demand in South Korea.
