Yonhap News

The private jet of Russian President Vladimir Putin landed on the runway of Pyongyang Sunan International Airport in the early morning of the 19th, marking a reunion between Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after nine months. North Korean state media described the two leaders’ meeting as a “historic encounter.”

The Korean Central News Agency reported, “Our respected comrade Kim Jong Un warmly received President Vladimir Putin.”

The news agency reported that another historic meeting between the top leaders of North Korea and Russia took place in Pyongyang. They said this meeting demonstrates the “invincibility and durability” of the two nations’ friendship and unity. It highlighted a critical time when the friendly relations between North Korea and Russia are being strengthened as a robust strategic fortress. This alliance aims to foster the construction of a new multipolar world and defend international justice, peace, and security.

The report continued, “They could not hide their joy and pleasure at meeting again, exchanging firm handshakes and warm hugs.” The Russian Ambassador to North Korea, Alexander Matsegora, and embassy staff reported attending the event.

According to the news agency, Kim accompanied Putin in his car to guide him to his accommodation at the Kumsusan State Guest House.

The Kremlin also released a video of the two leaders’ meeting. Putin and Kim shook hands, embracing each other twice as smiling in the video.

The two leaders traveled in an Aurus limousine, a seven-ton vehicle typically used by the Russian president. Putin gifted this luxurious car to Kim last February. Interfax reported that the Aurus used by Putin and Kim for their journey was indeed Putin’s vehicle.

Meanwhile, this is Putin’s first visit to North Korea in 24 years since July 2000. Due to domestic affairs, Putin arrived late in North Korea and is scheduled to travel to Hanoi, Vietnam, on the afternoon of the 19th. The two leaders are expected to sign a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement at the summit, scheduled for this afternoon.
