Faith or Foolhardiness? 180 South Koreans Journey to Conflict-Ridden Israel for Religious Event

Daniel Kim Views

As tensions in the Middle East soar amid intense airstrikes between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, it has emerged that over 180 South Koreans have entered Israel for a religious event.

According to Yonhap News, on the 26th, the Israeli consulate confirmed that these South Koreans arrived in Israel the previous day for a local event organized by a religious group.

The escalation follows the recent assassination of a Hamas leader, heightening concerns in the region. Early this morning, Israel and Hezbollah engaged in extensive airstrikes, further increasing tensions. While both sides appear to avoid further escalation, the situation remains highly volatile, with the potential for more retaliatory actions.

A Level 3 travel advisory (recommending departure) is in effect for all of Israel, except for the border area with Lebanon, which is under a Level 4 travel ban.

Despite these warnings, the 180 South Koreans proceeded with their plans to enter Israel. Consequently, South Koreans have risen from about 500 to approximately 680. There have been no reports of South Korean casualties so far.

The South Korean government strongly urges the prompt departure of the 180 recently arrived South Koreans and other South Korean nationals currently in Israel. The government is also reported to advise the religious organization involved in assisting in the departure of its members, both directly and indirectly.
