French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the situation regarding the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov. According to IT media reports Macron posted on X, the arrest was not a political move but a judicial cooperation. He said, “In a state governed by the rule of law, on social networks as in real life, freedoms are exercised within a framework established by law to protect citizens and respect their fundamental rights.”

He condemned Russia for falsely spreading misinformation, emphasizing, “This is in no way a political decision. It is up to the judges to decide.”

Durov was arrested in France on Saturday. He faces serious allegations related to the uncontrolled distribution of illegal content on Telegram, including child pornography, fraud, drug trafficking, organized crime, and terrorism advocacy.

The Cybercrime Response Center and the National Fraud Prevention Agency jointly conduct the investigation. Reports suggest that Durov’s detention could continue until August 28.

In response, Telegram issued a press release stating that it is “absurd to claim that a platform or its owner is responsible for the abuse of that platform.”
