Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly endorsed U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming election.
According to CNN, Putin stated at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), “I told you, our favorite, if I may say so, was the current president, Mr. Biden. He was removed from the race, but he advised all his supporters to support Ms. Harris. So we will do it as well, and we will root for her.” He also said that Harris’s “laughter is so expressive and infectious.”
In contrast, Putin criticized former President Donald Trump, accusing him of imposing more sanctions on Russia than any previous U.S. president.
This statement came on the heels of accusations from the U.S. Department of Justice, which charged two Russian media executives with election interference. Putin’s comments directly responded to U.S. warnings about foreign influence in the election.
The U.S. government swiftly condemned Putin’s remarks as an apparent attempt to interfere in the election. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby urged Putin to “stop interfering” in U.S. electoral processes.
However, CNN assessed that Putin’s action is nothing new. The network noted that he praised Trump even before he became the Republican candidate in 2015.
