North Korea has recently denounced a report on its human rights abuses published under the authority of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The regime dismissed the report as a “fabricated and distorted” account of the situation in the country.
In the statement reported through the Korean Central News Agency on Monday, Kim Sun Kyung, vice minister of the International Organization Department at North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, condemned the report as a “heinous anti-republic document.” Kim accused what he termed “hostile forces” of using the report to tarnish North Korea’s image and undermine its sovereignty.
He further asserted, “We firmly condemn and denounce this political provocation and violation of sovereignty by hostile forces aiming to undermine our nation’s dignity and system under the pretense of the UN. Instead of fabricating issues about human rights in North Korea, the UN Secretary-General and relevant human rights bodies should address the real and urgent human rights crises in the United States.”
Kim stressed, “The true threat to our people’s human rights is the hostile policies of the United States and its allies toward North Korea. The government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea remains dedicated to ensuring the safety, welfare, and genuine rights of its people against the human rights violations perpetrated by these hostile forces.”
Meanwhile, Guterres has recently released a report on human rights abuses in North Korea, which he will present at the upcoming 79th UN General Assembly in New York later this month. The report calls for thorough investigations and accountability for those responsible for these violations.
