Breaking: North Korean Defector Uses a Small Boat for Daring Sea Escape to South Korea

wikitree Views

Defections from North Korean residents to South Korea continue. Another defection from North Korea has been reported belatedly.

According to Yonhap News, a North Korean man crossed the Northern Limit Line (NLL) near Baengnyeong Island in the West Sea early on the morning of September 17 using a small boat.

The man reportedly embarked on the defection alone. The South Korean military authorities detected the boat with surveillance equipment before it crossed the NLL and guided the defector accordingly.

Regarding the situation at the time, a military official mentioned to the media that they conducted the operation normally from the beginning.

This marks the third defection in just over two months.

On August 8, a North Korean resident crossed into South Korea through a neutral zone at the Han River estuary. Then, on August 20, a North Korean soldier crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL).

Despite North Korea’s efforts to strengthen border security, defections continue. Recently, the regime has fortified frontline areas, including the MDL, with barriers and mines to curb internal unrest and prevent defections.

During a National Assembly audit on Thursday, Admiral Kim Myung Soo, Chairman of South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, addressed North Korea’s border fortifications. “Kim Jong Un’s regime is fearful,” he said. “They are taking extreme measures to block external infiltration and prevent internal personnel from fleeing.”
