North Korea’s Execution Squads Sent to Handle Potential ‘Runaways’ in Russia

Daniel Kim Views

On October 23, the Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim Jong Un inspected a strategic missile base.

Recent reports indicate that North Korea has sent execution squads alongside its troops deployed to Russia to prevent any potential defections.

Kim Yeoul Soo, head of the Korea Institute for Military Affairs Security Strategy Office, appeared on YTN‘s News PLUS on Tuesday. He stated that for every 30 North Korean soldiers sent to Russia, one interpreter and three Russian soldiers are assigned to monitor them.

In this context, Kim emphasized the necessity of psychological operations, such as distributing leaflets to encourage surrender at the front lines. The South Korean government is discussing related measures with NATO and other allies.

He also mentioned that Kim Young Bok, Vice Chief of the Korean People’s Army General Staff and a close associate of Kim Jong Un, has recently been dispatched. He noted that this signifies that a command structure for North Korean troop deployments to Russia has been established.

Addressing concerns about the combat readiness of the deployed soldiers, he cautioned that such assessments may be misguided because North Korea might have selected experienced elite troops for this deployment.
