Japan has initiated a review of additional sanctions against North Korea and Russia in response to the growing military cooperation between the two nations.

NHK reported on Tuesday that the Japanese government is exploring expanded asset freezes targeting both nations. Officials are particularly concerned about the implications of North Korean troop deployments to Russia, which have drawn sharp criticism from international allies.

Japan has already implemented a range of sanctions in response to North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile development programs. Japan had also imposed export-import restrictions and asset freezes against Moscow following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In coordination with other G7 nations, Japan aims to develop more comprehensive sanctions packages to pressure both regimes further. They also plan to enhance cooperation with its G7 partners to counter the growing threat North Korea-Russia ties pose.

Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi expressed deep concern over the deployment of North Korean troops in Russia to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to Ukraine on Saturday.
