Analysts predict that North Korea could eventually deploy up to 100,000 troops to support Russia in the ongoing Ukraine war, with troop rotations planned over time. Bloomberg reported on Sunday that some Group of Twenty (G20) countries are making this assessment.

While the situation is not immediate, the analysis suggests that North Korea could ultimately deploy a military force of 100,000 troops by rotating them in and out.

Dmytro Ponomarenko, Ukraine’s ambassador to South Korea, recently stated in an interview with Voice of America (VOA) that up to 15,000 North Korean troops could be rotated every few months. If rotated every two to three months, the North Korean military, which has experience in modern warfare, could potentially provide up to 100,000 troops over a year.

Bloomberg interprets the projection of 100,000 troops as indicating that Russian President Vladimir Putin may be willing to prolong the war.

The deployment of North Korean troops could escalate the conflict, which is already considered the most severe since World War II. Additionally, the close ties between North Korea and Russia could have far-reaching implications for the security balance in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly amidst intense U.S.-China competition.

Reports suggest that North Korea has already sent over 10,000 troops to Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces launched a surprise offensive in August. North Korea is also reported to have supplied millions of shells and other weapons to bolster Russia’s military efforts.
