South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol delivered an additional address to the nation from the Yongsan Presidential Office, “My fellow citizens, I declared a state of emergency with unwavering resolve to protect our nation at 11 PM last night. This decision was made to confront anti-state forces attempting to paralyze our government’s essential functions and undermine our constitutional democracy. However, in response to the National Assembly’s request to lift the martial law, I have ordered the withdrawal of troops deployed for this purpose. I will convene a Cabinet meeting to formally accept the Assembly’s request and lift the martial law.”
He further explained that he had called for a Cabinet meeting immediately, but they had not yet reached the required quorum for a decision due to the early hour. He assured that he would lift the martial law immediately as soon as enough members were present.
Yoon emphasized the urgent need for the National Assembly to stop what he described as reckless actions that are crippling the nation’s functions. He cited repeated impeachment attempts, legislative manipulation, and budget mismanagement as key issues that needed immediate cessation.
