Apple Ranks 2nd in Global Smartphone Production in the First Half of this Year
Xiaomi Holds the 3rd Position in Global Smartphone Production in the First Half of this Year
Samsung Electronics has recorded the highest global smartphone production for the first half of this year.
According to global market research firm TrendForce, the global smartphone production for the second quarter of this year was recorded at 272 million units.
The total smartphone production for the first half of this year was 522 million units, a 13.3% decrease compared to the first half of last year. This is the lowest smartphone production recorded in the past decade. Consumer spending has decreased as the economic downturn continues even after the pandemic.
Considering smartphone brands, Samsung Electronics maintained its top spot with a shipment of 53.9 million units (market share of 19.8%) in the second quarter. However, this is a 12.4% decrease compared to the previous quarter. This seems to be due to the fading effect of the flagship phone Galaxy S23 series, which was launched last February.
Last month, Samsung Electronics launched its new foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5, and is competing in the second half of the year. It set a new record in Korea with a pre-sale of 1.02 million units. It is also setting new sales records in the European market and is riding a wave of success.
However, due to the nature of foldable phones, the Galaxy Z5 is expected to have a minimal impact on the total production volume as its sales are relatively small compared to the S series or mid-to-low-priced phones. The annual sales expectation for Flip 5 and Fold 5 is around 10~15 million units.
Apple recorded the second-highest global smartphone production for the first half of this year, with a production volume of 42 million units (market share of 15.4%).
Apple’s production volume decreased by 21.2% compared to the previous quarter. Traditionally, the second quarter is considered a transitional period when old and new models of Apple are switched. This is the time of the year when iPhone sales are at their lowest.
Xiaomi recorded the third-highest global smartphone production for the first half of this year. While Samsung Electronics and Apple both saw a decrease in shipments compared to the previous quarter, Chinese companies such as Xiaomi, OPPO, Transsion, and Vivo increased their shipments by 15~72% during the same period.
As the global smartphone market continues to be sluggish, it is expected that Samsung Electronics and Apple will compete for the top spot in the year’s second half. At the same time, Chinese companies will simultaneously chase the lead.
