A recent study suggests that adequate sleep may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The results, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA Network Open), suggest that maintaining a consistent and healthy sleep pattern can enhance an individual’s overall well-being.
Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for about 34% of all deaths globally in 2019. Experts stress the importance of research to identify risk factors as the burden of cardiovascular disease continues to rise in nearly all countries.
According to the study published in the JAMA Network Open, middle-aged and older adults with healthy sleep habits may have a higher chance of preventing cardiovascular disease.
The researchers used data from a cohort study conducted in China between 2008 and 2018. They surveyed 15,306 individuals, with an average age of 66. Of these, 5,474 had consistently irregular sleep patterns, while 3,946 maintained regular sleep patterns. During the study period, the researchers reported 2,986 cases of coronary artery disease and 683 strokes, among other cardiovascular diseases. The researchers emphasized that those who consistently maintained good sleep patterns showed significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease during the follow-up period. They concluded that a good sleep pattern could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the researchers did not adjust for genetic factors related to cardiovascular disease. Experts agree that melatonin is essential for ensuring a regular sleep pattern and good sleep quality. They emphasize that exposure to bright light in the evening can inhibit the production and maintenance of melatonin. In addition to sleep duration, they also noted that going to bed regularly plays a crucial role in regulating the body’s internal clock.
