Fourth Of July Shenanigans: A New Hot Dog Eating Champion for the Year

inews24 Views

A new champion was crowned at the 2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest held on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, on the Fourth of July. The winner is 26-year-old Patrick Bertoletti.

The first ever hot dog eating contest was held in 1916. However, the competition hosted by Nathan’s began in 1972. It takes place at Nathan’s hot dog shop located on Coney Island.

The participant who eats the most hot dogs within 10 minutes wins the contest. According to CNN, “Bertoletti devoured 58 in 10 minutes.” Geoffrey Esper (53 hot dogs) and James Webb (52 hot dogs) followed Bertoletti, securing second and third places, respectively.

However, some people hesitated to declare Bertoletti a true champion, mainly because the hot-dog-eating legend, Joey Chestnut, did not participate in this year’s contest.

Chestnut first competed in the contest in 2007 and has won yearly except for 2015. However, Chestnut had a dispute with Nathan because he signed a partnership contract with Impossible Foods, which makes vegan hot dogs. In response, the contest banned Chestnut’s participation.

Miki Sudo became the champion in the women’s division by eating 51 hot dogs. Sudo broke her previous 2020 record of 48.5 hot dogs. Sudo has won three consecutive years, from 2022 to this year.

The best record of all time was set by Chestnut, who ate 76 hot dogs at the 2021 contest. The women’s division first started in 2011. Sudo won the contest in 2014, dethroning the champion, Sonya Thomas, who was competing for her fourth consecutive win. Sudo had a winning streak from then until 2020.
