As the war between Israel and the Palestinian armed faction Hamas breaks out, tensions between Jews and Muslims in the United States are also escalating. In Chicago, USA, a 6-year-old boy has been murdered in a hate crime against Islam.

According to a report by The New York Times (NYT) and a local police announcement on the 15th (local time), the Will County Police in Illinois are currently investigating  Joseph M. Czuba (71), who has been arrested on charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder. The police have also applied the charge of a hate crime.

Czuba is accused of stabbing 6-year-old Wadea Alfayoumi in a house in Plainfield Township, southwest of Chicago, and injuring the boy’s mother, Hanaan Shahin (32), with a knife.

Alfayoumi died from 26 stab wounds, and it was reported that Shahin also suffered more than 12 stab wounds.

Czuba is the landlord of the house where the crime occurred, and the victim’s mother reportedly lived on the first floor.

On the day of the incident, Czuba visited the victim’s mother’s house and, upon opening the door, he said, “Muslims like you should die,” and began straining her and wielding a knife.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim organization in the U.S., claimed he committed the crime after watching news about the Middle East conflict.

President Joe Biden emphasized in a statement on the 15th, “This family came to America seeking a refuge to live, learn, and pray in peace. This horrific act of hate has no place in America. We must reject hatred against Islam and all forms of prejudice and hatred.
