According to reports from Yonhap News and others on the 13th, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Agreement 32-2 (Judges Jo Seung-woo, Bang Yoon-seop, and Kim Hyun-soon) sentenced Mr. A (36) to nine years in prison on charges of fatal assault, confinement, and coercion.

In addition, the media reported that Mr. A was also ordered to complete a 40-hour child abuse treatment program and was banned from working at child-related organizations for two years on charges of emotional abuse in front of their four-year-old son.

The incident occurred on January 31st. On that day, Mr. A’s wife, Mrs. B (35), came home drunk with the help of the police. Mr. A was accused of beating Mrs. B for about five hours, causing her to die from excessive internal bleeding.

Mr. A was known to have had conflicts with his wife, who struggled with daily life and childcare due to alcohol dependence syndrome.

In November last year, they fought because his wife got drunk and urinated on the blanket while she was sleeping. At that time, Mr. A told Mrs. B to “take responsibility for the lost trust. Wear a leash with chains daily except for taking the child to and from school.”

When Mrs. B refused, Mr. A either expelled her from the house in her pajamas or confined her in the house.

The prosecution judged that “Mr. A confined (Mrs. B) to prevent her from drinking, and even though he coerced her, Mrs. B drank outside and returned home with the help of the police, which enraged him and led him to commit such a crime.”

Moreover, Mr. A claimed in court that “there was no act of violence except hitting his wife’s calf with a spatula three times on the day of her death,” but the court did not accept this.

The court explained that “there were no signs of injury when Mrs. B returned home with the police, the cause of death, a ruptured mesentery, can only occur when a great force is applied, according to forensic doctors, and the fact that they were alone at home after the police visit, the charges are acknowledged.”

The court pointed out that “the defendant treated his wife inhumanely and frequently used violence under the pretext of correcting her habits, and gaslighted her,” and “the mental and physical pain the victim must have felt would have been extreme.”

It added, “While it appears the defendant struggled with the victim’s drinking problem, and the victim’s parents petitioned for leniency, the defendant denied responsibility and tried to blame everything on the victim, showing no signs of remorse. Therefore, a severe punishment corresponding to the grave outcome is necessary.”

Meanwhile, although alcohol can stimulate the central nervous system and make you feel good in small amounts if the amount and duration of use increase, it can lead to insomnia, loss of appetite, restlessness, and anxiety.

To prevent this, getting health check-ups, eating regularly, and exercising is recommended.
