North Korea kept its hopes alive for the 2026 North American World Cup Asian third-round qualifiers by defeating Syria in a match held in Laos.
On the 6th, North Korea secured a 1-0 victory over Syria in the 2026 North and Central American World Cup Asia held in Vientiane, Laos. During the second round for Group B, Jong Il Gwan scored a goal at the end of the game, handing North Korea a comeback victory.
Japan is leading the group and has already secured its spot in the third preliminary round. North Korea maintained third place while narrowing the point gap with second-place Syria by one point.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the next round, and either North Korea or Syria will be eliminated after the final sixth match.
The match was originally to be hosted in North Korea but was moved to a different country due to North Korea’s request.
Normally, World Cup qualifiers are live-streamed on the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) website, but this was not the case for the match between North Korea and Syria. The results were only posted on the website 30 minutes after the game had ended.
