After an eight-year absence from the Olympic stage, North Korean athletes focus solely on training while avoiding outside contact.
The North Korean diving team competing in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics swimming events trained silently at the Paris Aquatic Center.
North Korea will be represented by 16 athletes who will be competing in seven events. Three athletes will participate in diving: Kim Mi Rae, 23, will compete in the women’s 10-meter and synchronized 10-meter platform events; Jo Jin Mi, 19, will join her in the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform; and Im Yong Myong, 22, will compete in the men’s 10-meter platform.
Notably, Kim Mi Rae, a star player in North Korean diving, won a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and placed fourth in the women’s 10-meter platform at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Kim Mi Rae and Jo Jin Mi have long trained together in synchronized diving. They won a gold medal at the 2019 FINA Diving World Series held in Montreal, Canada, and this past February, they secured a silver medal in the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform at the Doha 2024 World Aquatics Championships.
The North Korean team arrived at the venue around 11 a.m. yesterday, trained for about an hour and ten minutes, then left without passing through the mixed zone for media interactions. They did not engage in conversations with athletes from other countries.
Kim Mi Rae and Jo Jin Mi will be the first to compete for the North Korean team in the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform event on the 31st.
On the 5th of next month, Kim Mi Rae will participate in the women’s 10-meter platform preliminaries.
On August 9th, Im Yong Myong will compete in the men’s 10-meter platform preliminaries.
