According to “Fuel Economy,” a fuel-saving information website jointly operated by the U.S. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the IONIQ 6 Long Range RWD model (with a combined fuel efficiency of 140MPGe) has been named the “most fuel-efficient car.” The IONIQ 6 has been recognized as the most efficient electric vehicle by the EPA for two consecutive years, following 2023, when this model was certified.

MPGe (Mile Per Gallon equivalent) is a unit of measurement for the fuel efficiency of electric vehicles used by the U.S. EPA, based on the fact that the thermal energy obtainable by burning one gallon (approximately 3.785L) of gasoline is 33.7 kilowatt-hours (kWh). It is more convenient to compare fuel efficiency with internal combustion engine vehicles than the existing unit of measurement for the power consumption efficiency of electric vehicles (km/kWh).

In this survey, not only did the Hyundai IONIQ 6 take first place, but four models made it into the top 10. The standard RWD model (135MPGe) ranked third, the Long Range AWD 18-inch wheel model (121MPGe) ranked fifth, and the Long Range RWD 20-inch wheel model (117MPGe) ranked seventh.

The fuel efficiency of the IONIQ 6 Long Range RWD model, which took first place in this survey, is five times the average fuel efficiency (28MPGe) of 2024 new cars. According to Fuel Economy, if you own this model for five years, you can save an average of about $6,000 in fuel costs. When fully charged, the IONIQ 6 RWD model’s driving range is 361 miles (approximately 580km).

Not only the IONIQ 6 but also the Kia EV6 Long Range and Standard RWD models (117MPGe) tied for seventh place, the Hyundai Kona Electric Long Range (116MPGe) ranked eighth, and the Hyundai IONIQ 5 Long Range RWD model (114MPGe) took tenth.

As for Tesla, it has not yet reported the fuel efficiency of its 2024 models to the EPA. Based on the 2023 models, Model 3 (132MPGe) and Model Y (123MPGe) are either similar to or slightly lower than IONIQ 6. However, considering that the driving range (EPA estimated) of the 2024 Model 3 and Model Y listed on Tesla’s official U.S. website has decreased by 17 miles (approximately 27km) and 20 miles (approximately 32km), respectively, compared to the 2023 models, it is expected that their fuel efficiency will also decrease slightly.
