Trump stated that it could be possible to hand over some territory to Russia to expedite an end to the war in Ukraine
Biden faces backlash from some voters regarding Israel
The wars in Ukraine and the marched Strip are expected to influence the outcome of this year’s U.S. presidential election.
According to an analysis by U.S. political media outlets such as Axios and The Hill on the 18th, current President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump agree on the need for an early end to the wars. However, their opinions on how to conclude the wars differ sharply. Thus, the two conflicts have emerged as a deciding factor in determining the next occupant of the White House.
President Biden has firmly expressed his intent to stand by Ukraine and Israel in both wars. In the case of Ukraine, it has served as a buffer between NATO and Russia. This suggests a firm resolve to prevent Russia from seizing control of Ukraine. If Russia were to occupy all or part of Ukraine, NATO would find itself in a standoff with Russia.
The problem, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is that he has no easy excuse to back down. If the war ends without Russia having occupied part or all of Ukraine, Putin’s political life could be pushed to the brink.
At the current moment, former President Trump criticizes Biden’s policies, arguing that even if it involves handing over some Ukrainian territory to Russia, the war must be ended. Justifying Russia to end the war while conceding that Ukraine, with no chance of winning, would benefit from quickly ending the war even at the cost of losing some territory. Axios predicts that the longer the conflict continues, the more it benefits Trump.
In the war between Israel and Palestinian armed group Hamas, both Biden and Trump support Israel. However, President Biden faces criticism from some Democratic voters who believe he is too biased towards Israel. Some party members withdrew their support for Biden during the Democratic primary.
Former President Trump has been courting Jewish voters by blaming President Biden for the outbreak of the war due to insufficient support for Israel. Last week, he declared that Biden and the Democrats are 100 percent on the side of Palestine and that Jews who vote for Biden do not love Israel.
Positions also diverge in relations across the Taiwan Strait. President Biden is pressuring China by building a maritime blockade line that starts with Korea and Japan and extends to the Philippines and Indonesia, placing Taiwan at the center.
In contrast, there is speculation that former President Trump will disengage from the Taiwan Strait relations. Earlier this year, Trump told Fox News that Taiwan is a country that has stolen the semiconductor business from the U.S., stating they will pay the price. He then avoided a direct answer when asked whether the U.S. would defend Taiwan. Fox News analyzed that Trump aimed to target the centrist voters by toning down some of his more radical statements.
Meanwhile, Axios warned that the longer the two wars last, the more unfavorable the situation will become for President Biden, but also mentioned the crisis that a Trump victory could bring. The outlet cautioned that if Trump mindlessly pushes for the end of the war and loses interest in issues with China, the United States’ global standing could weaken compared to now.
