According to Yonhap News, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 29th that it has decided to issue a Level 4 (Travel Ban) travel advisory for Haiti from May 1st, following deliberation and decision by the Passport Policy Deliberation Committee of Passport Use Policy Subcommittee.

The Caribbean island nation of Haiti is in a severe state of lawlessness due to brutal gang violence. Previously, the South Korean government, with the assistance of the Dominican Republic, has twice supported the evacuation of Koreans residing in Haiti.

Anyone visiting or staying in a Level 4 travel advisory area without permission can be punished according to Article 26 of the Passport Act and other regulations.

About 60 of our citizens currently reside in Haiti. Following the travel ban designation, they must leave the country or obtain permission to use a special passport.

In addition, Rakhine State in Myanmar will also be designated as a travel ban area from May 1st. The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, “There is a need to prohibit visits and stays in Rakhine State for the protection of our citizens as the conflict between the military and the rebels has escalated.”

Following the designation of the northern and eastern parts of Shan State and Kayah State in Myanmar as travel ban areas since November 25th last year, the government has additionally designated Rakhine State this time.
