China and Russia Join Hands and Issues Warning Over U.S. Military Space Dominance

Russian Presidential Office

On the 16th, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a summit meeting and issued a joint statement.

According to the unofficial English translation, the joint statement includes strengthening cooperation in space.

China and Russia have agreed to cooperate in the following:

  • Disaster prevention
  • Mitigation
  • Relief
  • Safe production in space surveillance and aviation structure technology
  • Organizing joint structural training and education

Both countries plan to solidify their long-term cooperative relationship in space, implement major national space program projects that align with the common interests of China and Russia, promote cooperation in lunar and deep space exploration including the construction of an international lunar research station, and strengthen application cooperation of the BeiDou and GLONASS satellite navigation systems.

They also expressed serious concerns about attempts to undermine strategic stability to maintain the United States’ absolute military superiority. This includes building missile defense systems worldwide and in space, enhancing military operational capabilities with precision non-nuclear weapons, strengthening NATO’s “nuclear sharing” agreement, providing “extended deterrence” to certain allies, and building infrastructure in Australia that could support nuclear operations by U.S. and British forces.

They also expressed concern about plans to deploy and provide ground-based intermediate-range missiles in the Asia-Pacific and European regions through cooperation on nuclear submarines between the U.S., U.K., and Australia.

Furthermore, both countries oppose attempts by individual countries to militarize space, oppose security policies and activities to secure military superiority, and oppose defining space as a “battlefield.”

They called for the prompt conclusion of a legally binding multilateral agreement to prevent the deployment of space weapons and the threat or use of force against space objects. They called for multilateral negotiations based on a draft to achieve these goals.

Additionally, both countries agreed to promote an international initiative not to prioritize weapon deployment at a global level to promote the peaceful use of space, ensure the equal and indivisible security of all countries, and enhance the predictability and sustainability of space exploration and use.

This joint statement shows China and Russia’s will to maintain international peace and security through cooperation in space and opposes the United States’ attempts to maintain its military superiority.
