The presidential office held a security situation review meeting on the 30th, chaired by Second Deputy Director Yin Sung Hwan of the Office of National Security, in response to North Korea’s launch of short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs).

According to the presidential office, the security situation review meeting was held immediately after North Korea’s missile launch that morning. The meeting participants are known to have received a report on North Korea’s missile launch situation and discussed countermeasures.

The South Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff earlier announced that around 6:14 AM that day, they detected approximately 10 flying objects presumed to be short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) launched from the Sunan area in North Korea towards the East Sea.

The military is analyzing the exact specifications such as the flight distance, altitude, and speed of the flying objects launched by North Korea.

North Korea’s missile launch on the day is an armed provocation after just three days since the failure of a military reconnaissance satellite launch on the 27th.

Although it has continued missile provocations under the pretext of test launches, such mass firing is unusual. The missiles landed in the East Sea after flying approximately 217.48 miles.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff explained, “The military immediately detected and tracked the launch and shared relevant information closely with the U.S. and Japan. The detailed specifications are currently being comprehensively analyzed.”

He continued, “North Korea’s missile launch is a clear provocative act that seriously threatens peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. We strongly condemn it. He emphasized, “The military will maintain the ability and posture to overwhelmingly respond to any provocation under the firm South Korea-U.S. joint defense posture while keeping a close watch on North Korea’s various activities.”

Since the 28th, North Korea has attempted to disrupt the Global Positioning System (GPS) signals while simultaneously launching balloons filled with various trash and waste towards the south.
