Elon Musk Denies Diverting AI Chips from Tesla, Expects $3-4 Billion Spend on Nvidia Hardware

CEO Elon Musk announced in a post on X on Tuesday that Tesla is expected to spend between $3 billion and $4 billion on hardware from chip company Nvidia this year.
This statement refutes a previous report from a financial media outlet claiming that he diverted artificial intelligence chips away from Tesla Inc. to his X Corp.
On the 4th, Musk posted on his X account, “Of the roughly $10B in AI-related expenditures I said Tesla would make this year, about half is internal, primarily the Tesla-designed AI inference computer and sensors present in all of our cars, plus Dojo.”
“For building the AI training superclusters, NVidia hardware is about 2/3 of the cost. My current best guess for Nvidia purchases by Tesla are $3B to $4B this year,” he added.
Musk’s comments are interpreted to be a response to a report by CNBC earlier that day. CNBC previously cited internal memos and emails from Nvidia, claiming that Musk initially instructed the AI semiconductor chips ordered for Tesla to be delivered first to X and xAI.
