Nation Divided: Trump Supporters Confident, Biden Backers Hopeful

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump participated in their first TV debate today. 

Approximately 40% of voters thought Trump would do better.

In a poll conducted by CBS and YouGov from the 22nd to the 26th, targeting 2,032 adults, 41% of respondents chose Trump, while 26% chose Biden; the remainder responded with I don’t know.

Among Republicans, 79% expected Trump to win the debate. Among Democrats, only 58% expected Biden to perform better.

In response to a question about the tone of the debate, 68% of Democratic respondents said they wanted Biden to speak in a more forceful tone. In contrast, 88% of Republican supporters stated that Trump should debate in a more polite tone.

87% of respondents indicated they plan to watch the entire TV debate live or catch up on its key points.
