Biden vs. Trump: Epic Showdown or Historic Disaster?

Daniel Kim Views

President Biden and former President Trump clashed in their first presidential debate ahead of the 2024 election, hosted by CNN. Contrary to expectations, the debate has been widely criticized as the worst in history, marred by chaos and anger.

Chaos

Throughout the debate, both candidates traded sharp criticisms. Biden notably referred to Trump as a “dumb loser,” while Trump targeted Biden’s age, stamina, and golfing skills.

Economic issues

The debate opened with economic discussions, each defending their policies while attacking their opponent’s.

Biden highlighted successes in curbing inflation and addressing housing challenges. Conversely, Trump touted economic achievements during his term, asserting that Biden’s economic policies had faltered.

Market reaction after the debate

The U.S. stock and bond markets reacted swiftly during the debate.

Stock prices fell, and treasury bond yields increased, reflecting market uncertainty. Analysts attributed this reaction to the perception that Trump might gain an advantage.

Policy debate

Trump caused inflation concerns by proposing a hardline protectionist trade policy, including a 60% tariff on China and a 10% tariff on U.S. allies. On the other hand, Biden announced that he would promote economic recovery through infrastructure investment and increased fiscal spending.

Here are some critical remarks from the debate.

– Biden: “We are recovering from the economic collapse caused by Trump. We are creating more jobs and working to suppress inflation.”

– Trump: “We created the best economy in history. Biden’s policies have failed, and his inflation policy is causing pain to the people.”

Social and political impact

This debate was a significant opportunity to confirm both sides’ policy direction and vision, but it disappointed the public with harsh words and chaos. Both candidates defended their policies while slamming the opponents, only exacerbating the viewers’ confusion.
