With less than a month to go before the U.S. presidential election, a new poll shows former President Donald Trump outpacing Vice President Kamala Harris in key battleground states across the Rust Belt. Harris’s approval ratings have stalled, while Trump’s support has climbed, raising alarms within the Democratic Party about a potential repeat defeat to Trump.

A Quinnipiac University poll conducted from October 3 to 7 reveals Trump leading Harris in both Michigan and Wisconsin, with Harris clinging to a narrowing lead in Pennsylvania. Trump secured 50% of the vote in Michigan, edging Harris by three percentage points. In Wisconsin, Trump led with 48% to Harris’s 46%. In Pennsylvania, Harris maintained a slim lead of 49% to Trump’s 46%, down from a 6-point advantage in September. The poll surveyed 1,412 voters in Pennsylvania, 1,007 in Michigan, and 1,073 in Wisconsin.

On key issues like the economy, immigration, and Middle Eastern policy, Trump outperformed Harris in all three states. However, Harris retained an edge on abortion rights. Regarding trust in serving as Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. military, Trump led Harris in Michigan and Wisconsin, with the two tied in Pennsylvania.

Concerns are mounting within the Democratic Party as Harris struggles to hold onto support in the Rust Belt, a region that could decide the election’s outcome. Political outlets like Politico and The Hill have reported growing anxiety over her stagnant poll numbers, challenges in messaging, and weakening support among male voters. According to The Hill, “the party has started to hit the panic button over fears of losing the election.”
