Zelenskyy: If We Don’t Act Now, North Korean Troops Will Flood the Battlefield

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a stronger international response to North Korea, which he accused of supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Yonhap News reported the following based on Reuter‘s report.

In a video address on Sunday, Zelenskyy stated that substantial evidence indicates North Korea is not only sending equipment but also troops to assist Russia in its war efforts. Yonhap News, citing Reuters, reported that Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to world leaders who have spoken frankly about the growing cooperation between North Korea and Russia but urged a more decisive and honest response from the international community.

Zelenskyy warned that North Korea’s involvement represents “another state joining the war against Ukraine” and cautioned that increased engagement from Pyongyang would have far-reaching consequences. He suggested that North Korea’s participation in the conflict could escalate instability, stating, “Once North Korea starts learning the peculiarities of modern warfare, the threats could grow significantly.”

He further warned that if the global community fails to act decisively, North Korean soldiers could become as regular a presence on the front lines as Iranian-made Shahed drones, which have already caused extensive damage in Ukraine. Zelenskyy stressed that such a scenario would prolong the conflict and benefit no one.

Meanwhile, North Korea has remained silent on the matter despite South Korea’s announcement that a large number of North Korean troops have been sent to support Russia. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) confirmed on October 18 that an initial group of 1,500 North Korean soldiers had been deployed to Vladivostok, Russia. However, as of Monday morning, North Korea has not responded significantly to the NIS’s findings.
