Kim Jong Un Declares War on U.S. Policy—Is This the End of Talks for Good?

Daniel Kim Views

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reaffirmed his commitment to developing the strongest possible defense capabilities for national security, citing the hostile U.S. policy toward North Korea as confirmed through negotiations.

At the opening ceremony of the Defense Development 2024 military equipment exhibition, Kim stated, “We have exhausted all negotiation avenues with the United States. We’ve confirmed not a willingness for peaceful coexistence from the superpower, but rather an unwavering stance of power and persistently aggressive, hostile policy toward our nation.”

This statement preemptively dismisses the possibility of renewed dialogue, including potential summits, even if former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had previously engaged with Kim in high-profile meetings, were to be re-elected.

Kim attributed the current heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula to deliberate policy choices rather than misunderstandings, squarely placing the blame on the United States. He emphasized, “The current geopolitical reality reinforces our conviction that possessing the most formidable defense capabilities, capable of overwhelming any adversary, is the sole guarantee of peace, stability, and national development.”

During his address, Kim outlined objectives for modernizing military equipment to meet the demands of contemporary warfare. He stressed the importance of upgrading the military arsenal to defend against forces threatening North Korea’s sovereignty. He emphasized, “This is essential to address the evolving security challenges we face and to incorporate the lessons learned from modern battlefields.”
