President-elect Donald Trump has indicated that North Korea’s involvement has made ending the war in Ukraine more difficult. Despite this, he expressed his commitment to resolving the conflict through negotiations.

In an interview with Time magazine released on Thursday, Trump addressed the possibility of abandoning Ukraine by stating that his goal is to reach an agreement, and the only way to do that is by not giving up.

“I think the Middle East is going to get—as we speak, things are happening very productively in the Middle East. I think the Middle East is going to get solved. I think it’s more complicated than the Russia-Ukraine situation, but I think it’s easier to solve.” Trump said.

Trump highlighted Russia-Ukraine and the Middle East as the main ongoing global issues but noted that North Korea has added complexity. He emphasized his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, stating that he gets along well and might be the only person who has dealt with him properly.

He acknowledged the situation’s complexity, expressing his intent to negotiate and resolve the conflicts, whether the Ukraine war and the Gaza conflict ended separately or simultaneously. He believes this will demonstrate his effectiveness in handling these situations.

When asked if he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin since the election, Trump responded that he could not disclose that information.

By emphasizing his relationship with Kim, Trump has raised the possibility of continuing U.S.-North Korea talks during a potential second administration, following the precedent set in his first term.
