Putin’s Approval Rating at 82%
No Rivals as Long as Russia Does Not Lose in the Russia-Ukraine War
The Kremlin has expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin (71) will win the 2024 presidential election scheduled for next March. The term of the Russian president is six years, meaning Putin could potentially hold the presidency until 2030.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed Putin’s predicted victory in an interview with CNBC released on the 10th (local time).
In an email sent to CNBC, he stated, “There has been no official announcement regarding (the nomination for the election) yet,” but “there is no doubt that if he (Putin) runs, he will win confidently.”
According to a monthly opinion poll conducted by the Russian polling agency Levada Center, Putin’s approval rating in October was as high as 82%. Before the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, Putin’s approval rating had hovered in the 60% range.
While Russia does have opposition parties, these parties support the government. They also tacitly approved Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February last year.
Experts predict that unless there is a severe economic downturn in Russia or Russia does not lose in the Russian-Ukrainian war, it will be difficult for a competitor to emerge to challenge Putin.
