Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, announced that he is raising the salaries of artificial intelligence (AI) talent. This move comes amid fierce competition among global big tech companies to recruit AI professionals.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Musk conveyed this stance on his X (formerly Twitter) on the 4th (local time). In a Q&A with Soye Merritt, founder of TwinBirch, Musk said, “OpenAI is aggressively recruiting Tesla engineers by offering substantial rewards,” and “Tesla is incrementally increasing the compensation for our AI engineering team.” He also described the situation as “the most insane talent war I’ve ever seen.”
With the recent AI boom, there are reports of an escalating talent war among major tech companies. Startups, in particular, are competing with established corporations to develop next-generation AI technology. The WSJ stated, “Tech companies are offering compensation packages worth millions of dollars annually and are proposing to recruit entire engineering teams to attract personnel with AI knowledge and experience.”
However, on the flip side, companies are also laying off employees to cover the costs of AI technology development. The WSJ reported that “layoffs are ongoing in other tech sectors to make room for more investment.”
Meanwhile, Tesla’s AI strategy focuses on autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots. The WSJ said, “The unveiling of a humanoid robot at the 2022 Tesla event was part of an effort to be recognized by the public as more than just an electric car manufacturer.”
