Following President Joe Biden’s disastrous performance in the first TV debate as a presidential candidate, a poll showed that more than 70% of respondents think that ‘President Biden should not seek a second term.’ In response, prominent Democratic members have been stepping up their support for President Biden to provide backup.

According to a poll (margin of error ±4.2%p) conducted by CBS TV and YouGov on two dates after the debate among some 1,100 registered voters nationwide, about 72% of respondents answered ‘no’ to the question, ‘Should President Biden run for re-election?’

This is a 9% point (p) increase compared to the same institution’s survey in February.

Further, it was reported that nearly half, or 46%, of Democratic supporters oppose his candidacy. When asked, ‘Should President Biden be nominated as a presidential candidate?’ 45% of Democratic members said, ‘ He should step down.’

Conversely, prominent Democratic members appeared on various programs throughout the day, reiterating their support for Biden’s re-election.

Jim Clyburn, the Democratic House Majority Whip, admitted on CNN that Biden’s debate performance was a “mess” that caused “some anxiety” among the House members.

However, he emphasized, “President Biden should aim for re-election, using his achievements and his contrasting image with former President Trump as his weapon.”

In an interview with CNN, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, “It was a bad night for President Biden.”

“Let’s move forward from here. Everything is an opportunity.”

Representative James Clyburn also appeared on CNN, stating that “the debate was not good, and there was a preparation overload,” but firmly said, “President Biden will run again.”

According to the White House, Biden spent time with his family at his Camp David retreat outside Washington on Monday. The spokesperson refuted reports that he would discuss future election campaigns with his family, saying it was “scheduled before the debate.”

However, this is prompting various speculations since Biden, as a former vice president, had previously made important career decisions after spending time with his family.
