China’s Xi Jinping Takes Aim at US at SCO Summit: What You Need to Know

Daniel Kim Views

Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded his participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, yesterday. During the event, he criticized the US-centric global system, voicing anti-western solid sentiments. Judging by the explosive reactions from the heads of state present at the conference, he apparently achieved his intended impact.

According to reports from China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency, Xi specifically emphasized the need for solidarity among member countries in his conference speech, even using the word “resistance.” While he did not specifically mention any countries like the United States, his remarks can reasonably be interpreted as targeting the U.S.-led Western alliance.

Xi emphasized the need for SCO member countries to unite more firmly against real challenges like interference and division, stressing the importance of jointly resisting foreign interference. He added that Cold War-style thinking poses a significant threat to SCO member countries. Furthermore, he commented on the importance of addressing problems with a spirit that embraces similarities and respects differences.

Also, he actively assessed the current global situation, stating that the world is experiencing unprecedented rapid changes for the first time in a century. He affirmed that the SCO stands on the correct side of history, fairness, and justice from a historical perspective. Xi targeted the United States by saying, “In the face of the realistic risk of a small yard, high fence (a U.S. policy to block the flow of advanced technology to countries like China), we must defend our right to development.”

The heads of state attending the conference also actively responded to Xi’s claims. For example, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that a multipolar world has now become a reality and that ensuring the security of SCO member countries is one of the top priorities within the SCO.

No significant results related to the solution to the Ukraine crisis were derived from the conference that day. Also, it is known that the issue on the Korean Peninsula was not explicitly mentioned. Instead, several documents were adopted, including the Astana Declaration proposed by the host country Kazakhstan and a strategy for economic cooperation among member countries by 2030.

Through this declaration, the member countries expressed deep concern about the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. They strongly criticized actions leading to numerous civilian deaths and worsening humanitarian situations.

Chinese media reported that Xi departed for Tajikistan, his next state visit destination, immediately after the SCO summit concluded that afternoon. He is scheduled to fulfill his itinerary in Tajikistan until the 6th. It would be fair to say that at a rapid pace, China is trying to curb the United States and settle a multipolar world continuously.
