World Reacts as Trump Faces Gunfire on the Campaign Trail

Daniel Kim Views

As the November elections come closer, leaders around the world have united to denounce the act of terror that resulted in the shooting of former President Donald Trump.

On July 13, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed, “Political violence in any form has no place in our societies, and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack” via social media.

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also declared on social media that “we must firmly stand against any form of violence that challenges democracy.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “sickened” by the incident and emphasized that “political violence is never acceptable.”

Known for their pro-Trump stance, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wished the former president a speedy recovery.

In recent years, there has been an increase in attacks towards politicians and leaders, both past and present, including Trump.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed in July 2022 while running for office. Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse was shot and killed at his Port-au-Prince home in July 2021.

While meeting with supporters in May, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico took bullets to his chest and abdomen, resulting in serious injuries. In April, an explosive device was thrown at Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s campaign site. Moreover, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked in Copenhagen Square last month while conducting a campaign.

Former leader of the South Korean Democratic Party, Lee Jae Myung, was stabbed in January by a man who posed as a supporter.

From Abraham Lincoln in 1865 to John F. Kennedy in 1963, four American presidents have been assassinated while in office. After the 1970s, four sitting presidents, including Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, were attacked, but the assassination attempts did not result in fatal injuries.
