A group of Chinese tourists were trapped in a store for several hours after refusing to make purchases.
According to foreign media outlets such as the South China Morning Post (SCMP), 37 local tourists who visited Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province, China, on the 26th of last month were confined in a bedding store for refusing to buy mattresses and pillows.
At that time, the tourists were visiting the store as part of a package tour itinerary. They were pressured to buy bedding. However, when no one made a purchase, the store employees blocked the exit.
One of the tourists, angered by the situation, filmed the incident and shared it on social media, bringing the incident to light.
In the video posted, people presumed to be tourists are seen lying or sitting on the beds, unable to freely leave the store. The tourist who shared the video claimed that the bedding store even had security guards to prevent them from leaving.
It is not clear exactly how many hours they were confined in the store, but it is assumed that it took quite a while for them to get out.
As the video spread, the Chinese authorities also launched an investigation. The store was ordered to cease operations, and the guide who led the tourists to the store was reportedly fined 10,000 yuan (about $1,500).
Meanwhile, there have been controversies in Yunnan Province over tourists being forced to buy items at tourist sites. In February, a family was asked to get off the tour bus by the guide after refusing to buy a gold bracelet worth about $800.
