A Closer Look At North Korea’s Science and Technology Research

The Rodong Sinmun reported on the 14th that North Korea’s science and technology sector is embarking on national priority projects.

According to data compiled by the National Science and Technology Committee, following May, all national priority projects for this year have been progressing as planned so far this month.

The Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex is proceeding with an object subject to improve the technical and economic indicators of energy-saving oxygen blast furnaces in collaboration with the Kim Chaek University of Technology.

The projects for breeding high-quality wheat and barley varieties and introducing cultivation technology are also being pushed forward as planned, and solid guarantees have been prepared to exceed the set goals.

The Crop Research Institute at the Academy of Agricultural Science is pushing forward projects to breed new varieties of sugar beets and multi-harvest rapeseeds with good oil-quality canola. It is also planning to introduce castor oil.

Various units including the Forest Research Institute, the Biotechnology Institute of the Academy of Sciences, the Botanical Research Institute, and Kim Il Sung University are tasked with research projects to breed new varieties of existing Evodia daniellii and trees for the forest to harvest oil.

Kim Chaek University of Technology is working on a project to establish a standardized integrated production system in city and county food factories.

Kim Chong T’ae Electric Locomotive Works is intensifying cooperation with various units of the science education sector, such as the Railway Research Institute, to complete the development of a new type of subway car and is currently conducting operational tests.

The Institute of Ferrous Metal of the Academy of Sciences is establishing a production process for slow-action granular fertilizer, and the Mathematics Research Institute of the Academy of Sciences is working on a project to establish technology to improve the machining accuracy of CNC machine tools with Kim Chaek University of Technology and Hamheung University of Chemical Industry.

The newspaper added that the State Planning Commission, the Ministry of Electric Power Industry, the Ministry of Information Industry, the Ministry of Land and Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Education, as well as the Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Agricultural Science, the Committee, the Ministry, and central agencies are pushing forward national priority projects as planned.
