China’s Appetite Shakes Up Global Fruit Prices: How China’s Love for Durians Is Reshaping Trade

Daniel Kim Views

“When Chinese people eat a certain food, the price of that food goes up worldwide”

Recently, the popularity of durian has dramatically increased in China. Last year, Southeast Asian countries exported durians worth $6.7 billion to China, a roughly 60% increase from $4 billion in 2022. According to a report by HSBC last year, China accounted for 91% of the global demand for durians. This means that China is sweeping up most of the durians exported worldwide. This demonstrates the immense global impact of Chinese consumption power.

Even in China, known for its cheap fruit prices, durians are pretty expensive. According to SCMP, durians in China can sell for up to $28. As China’s demand has increased, the price has jumped 15 times over the past 10 years. Why has the demand for durians, known as the Hermes of fruits, recently increased so much in China?
