The South Korean military authorities spotted that North Korea has been working to remove railway sleepers and rails on the Gyeongui Line, which follows the East Sea Line, since the end of last month.
According to the South Korean Ministry of National Defense on the 11th, North Korea has been identified as removing railway sleepers and rails in the northern section of the Gyeongui Line, which connects the Kaesong Station and the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), since the end of last month.
In May, North Korea started dismantling the northern section of the East Sea Line railway, which leads from the MDL to Mount Kumgang.
Furthermore, the North Korean military continuously carries out various tasks, such as erecting structures that seem to be anti-tank barriers in some areas of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and creating barren lands to enhance border capabilities.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had instructed in his New Year’s address to the Supreme People’s Assembly in January that “we must strictly implement phased measures to separate all inter-Korean linkage in the border area completely.”
The military analyzed that the North Korean forces are working more than 12 hours a day on average, even carrying out night work, and it remains to be seen whether such work will expand to the entire DMZ in the future.
