Poll Shocker: Over 70% of South Koreans Demand Yoon Suk Yeol’s Impeachment

A recent poll by Realmeter, commissioned by Energy Economy Newspaper, reveals that a significant majority of South Koreans support President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment following his declaration of emergency martial law. The survey, conducted on Thursday, found that 73.6% of respondents favored impeachment, while 24.0% opposed it.

Support for impeachment was strong across all regions, with Gangwon province leading at 86.9%. Other notable figures included Gwangju and Jeolla (79.3%), Incheon and Gyeonggi (77.3%), Daejeon, Chungcheong, and Sejong (74.0%), Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang (72.9%), Seoul (68.9%), and Daegu and North Gyeongsang (66.2%).

The sentiment also cut across age groups, with younger demographics showing particularly high support: 18-29-year-olds (86.8%) and those in their 40s (85.3%). Support decreased slightly among older age groups but remained substantial, with 76.4% of those in their 50s, 62.1% in their 60s, and 56.8% of respondents aged 70 and above backing impeachment.

The political divide was evident, with 94.6% of progressives and 71.8% of moderates favoring impeachment. Conservatives were nearly split, with 50.4% supporting impeachment and 48.0% opposing it.

When asked whether Yoon’s declaration of martial law constituted a crime of insurrection, 69.5% agreed, while 24.9% disagreed.

The survey employed random digit dialing (RDD), with 97% mobile and 3% landline responses. At a 95% confidence level, it has a margin of error of ±4.4 percentage points, and the response rate was 4.8%.
