[Review: Potato Jisoo 72%] *Wish*… “Make a Wish” Disney’s hollow cry
Founded on October 16, 1923, Disney (Walt Disney Company) is a comprehensive media and entertainment company representing the United States and exerting influence worldwide. At the foundation of Disney are various stories and characters that have gifted dreams, hopes, and childhood innocence to many people for a whopping 100 years.
Starting with the first feature-length animation ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ in 1937, Disney has churned out countless masterpieces including ‘Pinocchio’, ‘Dumbo’, ‘Bambi’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘Tarzan’, ‘Aladdin’, ‘Mulan’, and many more. These continue to exert influence as super IP (intellectual property) and serve as inspiration for secondary creations.
‘Story’ and ‘Character’ have functioned as a strong force supporting Disney’s 100 years. The movie ‘Wish’ (directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn) is a work released by Disney to commemorate the 100th anniversary. The production team from the ‘Frozen’ series, which captivated more than 20 million domestic audiences through courageous and lovable characters like Elsa and Anna, is gathering a lot of anticipation.
‘Wish’ which was released in North America last November will be released domestically on January 3 next year. Ahead of the release, ‘Wish’ which was released through a press preview on the 21st leaves a deep regret with a typical and bland story, characters, and OST. The movie which repeatedly emphasizes ‘wish’ and ‘dream’ in a situation where the story’s framework is not firmly established leaves an impression of being “ambiguous,” just like the words of a character in the play.
● Happenings in the Kingdom of Magic
The backdrop of the movie is ‘Rosas,’ a magical kingdom where wishes come true. The Magnifico King of the place is a ruler with magical powers he has acquired himself. He receives the infinite admiration and support of the citizens of the Rosas Kingdom. The citizens entrust their wishes to the king. The king keeps those wishes and also fulfills them through the ‘Wish Fulfillment Ceremony.’
In Rosas, there lives a brave girl named Yasa who values her family and those around her. Yasa sincerely loves and is proud of the Rosas Kingdom where she was born and raised. She gets the opportunity to become an apprentice of the Magnifico King and learns about his secretive plan during the interview with a buoyant heart. The king never intended to grant everyone’s wishes in the first place.
Yasa whose world she believed in is shaken to the core, decides to return the people of Rosas wishing that the Magnifico King has her friends, a goat friend Valentino who can speak with the power of the ‘star’ that came down from the sky with infinite energy and possibility, and other friends.
● The attempt to highlight ‘Wish’ is meaningful… but it’s hard to find individuality and charm
The attempt of ‘Wish’ to emphasize the meaning of Disney’s 100th-anniversary work through the subject of ‘wish’ stands out.
‘The Little Mermaid’ wanted to get out of the sea and go out into the world and ‘Rapunzel’ who was trapped in a tower wished to go outside the house. What about ‘Aladdin’? The genie of the lamp grants three wishes.
The protagonist of ‘Wish’ Yasa repeatedly says “I wish like this” and “We who can dream bigger than now.” It emphasizes the message throughout the running time that everyone can dream big and that wishes are important.
However, the story development is easily predictable, and the confrontation and problem-solving between the bright and cheerful protagonist and the typical villain obsessed with narcissism follow the ‘cliché’ that Disney has shown countless times. The protagonist’s words do not generate persuasiveness in a narrative that is not solidly built.
The production team said they were inspired by the villain characters who appeared in Disney animations such as ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Snow White’, and ‘The Little Mermaid’, but it is hard to find the distinctive personality of ‘Wish’. The absence of a differentiated villain character diminishes the charm of the movie.
The problem-solving is also surprisingly easy to unravel giving a feeling of losing momentum.
