OverAir Partners with Fort Worth Airport for eVTOL Research

globalautonews Views

Overair, a leading Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) company based in Santa Ana, California, announced on November 16, 2023, that it has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) to research, develop, and implement eVTOL (electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing aircraft: air taxi) operations in North Texas. Last month, Overair inked three partnerships in South Korea with Hanwha Systems and others to establish an eVTOL business. This includes the Letter of Intent to sell up to 20 Butterfly eVTOLs and accelerate South Korea’s AAM targets. Hanwha Systems is participating in the UAM Demonstration Project with SKT, Korea Airports Corporation, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport.

Overair, spun off from Karem Aircraft in 2020, developed its flagship eVTOL called the Butterfly. It can transport up to five passengers and one pilot or 1,100 pounds of cargo. The prototype can reach top speeds of 200 mph and travel about 100 miles on a single charge.

It announced a new collaboration to establish eVTOL operations in the U.S. It has signed a new MOU with Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in North Texas. The airport is exploring the development of future vertical takeoff and landing ports and eVTOL operations within the DFW Metroplex, leveraging Overair’s expertise.

It also announced an MOU with the city of Arlington. It added that this is the first direct partnership between a Texas city and an eVTOL OEM. Similar to the agreement with DFW Airport, Overair and Arlington plan to research, develop, and initiate eVTOL operations in the city, starting with Arlington Airport.

Overair stated that it is accelerating the assembly of the Butterfly eVTOL prototype. It has assembled the fuselage, wings, and other components and plans to start a flight test program in 2024. The goal is to begin commercial operations before the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
