According to the legal community, on the 8th, the Busan District Court’s Criminal Division 6, under Judge Kim Yong-Kyun, sentenced a man in his thirties prosecuted for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (drug abuse) and the Act on the Control of Narcotics (drug abuse), to nine years in prison and fined him 34.3 million won($29,000).

He was brought to trial on charges of smuggling 218.5 grams of methamphetamine, valued at 21.85 million won($18,500), through Incheon International Airport on December 29 last year.

Having received the methamphetamine at a hotel in Manila, Philippines, he utilized the method of concealing drugs in sanitary pads and wearing them inside his underwear.

Furthermore, from October to December last year, he communicated with a drug dealer in the Philippines. He managed drugs by hiding or collecting about 380 grams of methamphetamine in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and other areas.

The court stated the reason for the sentencing as follows: “The defendant committed the crime during the period of recidivism and performed a role divided with accomplices in an organized manner, importing and managing a considerable amount of methamphetamine, which makes the nature of the crime severe.”
