YouTube Stunt Gone Wrong: Man Gets 4 Years for Assault to Boost Views

inews24 Views

A man in his 40s was sentenced to four years in prison for assaulting people and threatening them with a weapon in an attempt to increase the views on his YouTube channel.

According to the legal community on the 7th, the Daejeon District Court’s 11th Criminal Division sentenced a 40-year-old man to four years in prison on charges of violating the law on punishment of violence, obstructing the execution of official duties, and repeated assaults.

The perpetrator was brought to trial on charges of dangerous behavior, such as swinging a weapon in the streets of Dong-gu, Daejeon around 1:55 AM on November 5 of last year to increase the views on his YouTube channel.

He repeatedly assaulted the victim who tried to stop him and threw the circular top of a parking sign at him, causing an injury. He was also charged with threatening public officials by kicking office furniture and swearing when he visited the office of Boeun County, Chungbuk in September last year.

The perpetrator, who was released in March 2022 after receiving prison sentences more than twice for violent crimes, has committed assault again after already having repeated offenses.

In the trial, the perpetrator’s defense attorney argued, “The defendant struggles from depression and intermittent explosive disorder, so his inability to distinguish objects or make decisions should be taken into account.”

In response, the court acknowledged the fact that “the defendant has been hospitalized for treatment several times due to mental disorders,” but also stated, “It is hard to see that the mental disorders above were manifested, considering the circumstances and methods of the crime, and his behavior before and after the crime.”

The court explained the reason for the sentencing by pointing out, “We recognize the severity of his crime, as he committed violence against strangers. There is no convincing reason for assaulting multiple victims seven times over four months from July last year, just four months after his release.”
