Yesterday, during a counterterrorism drill associated with the joint South Korea-U.S. exercise Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS), several incidents resulted in injuries to soldiers and police officers.

That morning, a smoke grenade accidentally discharged during a practice session for the drill in the Olympic Park area of Songpa-gu, Seoul.

According to the Army, the fragments from the smoke grenade injured five people, including two Army soldiers, two police officers, and one social service agent. One soldier was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and later returned to base, while the other four received first aid on the spot.

An Army Capital Defense Command official stated, “We are investigating the exact cause of the smoke grenade incident and will take appropriate follow-up measures based on the results.”

Later in the afternoon, near the Somerset Palace Seoul in Jongno-gu, another incident occurred during a counterterrorism drill. A drone controlled by the Army crashed, injuring a police officer from a riot squad who was guarding a facility nearby. The officer’s forehead was cut about 7 cm and received emergency treatment.
