The U.S. think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) hinted that South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol could step down following the emergency declaration.

Victor Cha, the Korean Chair at the CSIS, along with researchers Andy Lim and Sei Yeon Ji, published an analysis on its official website in a Q&A format on Tuesday.

CSIS reported that although the government lifted the emergency early Tuesday, Yoon’s political survival remains uncertain. They noted that rapid legislative moves to overturn the emergency declaration and the potential spread of street protests could contribute to Yoon’s downfall, which currently holds a 10% approval rating.

They also warned that while there have been no statements from North Korea yet, Pyongyang is likely to exploit the current chaos for propaganda against Yoon’s administration.

Additionally, they mentioned that the Biden administration is cautious in commenting on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
