The Kremlin announced on Monday that North Korean troops may participate in Russia’s Victory Day celebrations next year. The celebrations take place to commemorate World War II.

Yuri Ushakov, the Kremlin’s foreign affairs advisor, told TASS and RIA Novosti that North Korea will be among the countries sending troops to the eightieth-anniversary parade next May.

Ushakov emphasized the significance of Russia’s upcoming eightieth Victory Day anniversary. He mentioned that several foreign leaders are expected to visit Russia for the occasion, with military contingents from various countries participating in the parade.

Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un last month and extended the invitation to the North Korean troops. He expressed hope for a positive response.

Russia’s inclusion of North Korean troops in next year’s Victory Day celebrations is seen as a move to showcase its strengthened military ties with North Korea. Some analysts speculate that Kim himself might visit Moscow for the event.

When asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s potential overseas trip in January, Ushakov stated that preparations for several events, including those in January, are underway. Still, it was premature to make any announcements. He hinted at welcoming “interesting visitors” shortly.

Ushakov also revealed that multiple countries have offered to facilitate a meeting between Putin and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Both leaders have repeatedly expressed willingness to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
